The Podziemne Miasto Osówka compound is an original underground network of tunnels and caves dug out by prisoners during WWII in Poland. It is one of the largest and most incredible underground mazes and caves created within the mountains. Its purpose is still unclear but many people believe it was used secretly by the Nazis to create nuclear weapons. Deep down within the eerie, cold, silent mountain, Podziemne Miasto Osówka wanted to re-create the WWII atmosphere using projected imagery and videos on the uneven cave and tunnel walls.
Łukasz Skibiński, the General Manager at Projekt Multimedia s.c. commented: “Osówka is very popular among tourists and we needed to ensure the products selected were top quality.”
Podziemne Miasto Osówka was looking for a robust solution, with a guaranteed long lifespan, 7-year warranty and better than usual protection against the very demanding environment. The underground conditions are harsh. It is extremely cold at 8°C with lots of moisture and humidity in the atmosphere creating condensation.
In addition to this, the projectors needed to be able to project on uneven and unpredictable cave surfaces and run for 8-12 hours a day. It was therefore paramount that the projectors were powerful, reliable, bright and able to withstand difficult environmental conditions underground.
Unlike other competitors in the running for the project, Optoma was the only brand able to offer an IP5X rating, a 7-year warranty and project incredible imagery using laser projectors despite the challenging cold and humid conditions.
Łukasz Skibiński, the General Manager at Projekt Multimedia s.c. stated: “We’ve been looking for a long-term projection solution for this very demanding and complex installation which comes with IP5X rating. This is when we thought about the professional Optoma laser projection range.”
Projekt Multimedia s.c.’s installers specialise in producing exciting exhibitions and selected seven Optoma ZU510Te projectors as well as two Optoma ZU500TST projectors as the best solution for the project.
Seven ZU510Te Optoma laser projectors were installed, offering bright, vivid imagery at 5,500 lumens in ‘better than Full HD’ WUXGA resolution. The projector features advanced optical components and a lightweight compact chassis. Additionally, the projector comes with an IP5X-certified dust resistant laser phosphor optical engine. The ZU510Te was the perfect solution as it was engineered to provide a hassle free, maintenance free experience for the end user. In addition to this, the projector can operate continuously for 24 hours a day. Additionally, the ZU510Te projector was developed for maximum flexibility including a fixed lens with horizontal and vertical lens shift, offering a unique 1.2-2.13 throw ratio and a zoom ratio of 1.8x. The projector can also be installed in any orientation including vertically up, down and portrait without affecting its performance which suited the uneven cave surfaces perfectly.
Two ZU500TST professional laser projectors offering bright 5000 lumens, WUXGA resolution and a short throw lens of only 0.79:1 were also installed. Similarly, to the ZU510Te, the ZU500TST projector has advanced optical components, a lightweight chassis and IP5X-certified dust resistant optical engine making this a very well-suited versatile projector for the installation purposes.
The incredibly powerful memories within the secret underground tunnels have been brought back to life through the Optoma projectors. Guests feel fully immersed in the environment and get a very accurate experience of what it was once like hidden away deep down within the mountains.
The Mayor of Głuszyca, Roman Głód stated: “Our main goal was to modernise and expand Podziemne Miasto Osówka exhibition like other advanced and spectacular museums in Poland. By incorporating the modern Optoma ZU510Te and ZU500TST projectors and other interesting architectural elements, our venue has become extremely popular.” He added: “Using cutting-edge multimedia technologies with voices of very famous Polish leaders has allowed younger generations to better understand the incredible history and hardship of WWII within these tunnels and caves.”
Łukasz Skibiński, the General Manager at Projekt Multimedia said: “We’ve been in contact with Optoma’s representative for some time and he has provided excellent support throughout the project, way beyond market standards. He was on site during the whole installation process and helped us from the very beginning through to the very end. We are extremely happy with the final result."
