Challenge
Heidi from Hertfordshire wanted a dedicated home cinema in the vaulted ceiling of her converted barn.
About the size of a single garage, the barn adjoins her beautifully renovated 17th Century Grade II listed cottage and has been used as her main TV room for over a decade. But Heidi wanted a major update: replacing her old 65” plasma screen with the latest 4K projector, changing the old speakers to an immersive Atmos Surround Sound and maximising the screen size for the space.
The space is bright with no blinds so the projector would need to punch through the ambient light for daytime use while still retaining excellent contrast for films in the evening. It would also need to be sensitively installed to remain in keeping with this historic building.
Solution
Tring-based AV experts, Home Technology & Cinema, installed a full home cinema system including lighting control, Dolby Atmos 5.2.2 set up using GoldenEar speakers and Yahama amplifier, 77” fixed frame screen from IntoAV and Optoma’s UHD60 4K UHD projector.
The team mounted the projector under a wooden shelf that matches the original beams of the building. This shelf was suspended from the beams of the converted barn by a metal chains, mottled with black paint to give a rustic look in keeping with the room.
Chris White, Technical Director at Home Technology & Cinema, said: “We chose the UHD60 because it gave us excellent 4K UHD imagery at an excellent price point for the budget.”
At 3,000 lumens, the UHD60 produces bright images for life-like big-screen entertainment even with the lights on.
With the full 8.3 million on-screen pixels, it meets the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) requirements for 4K UHD and complies with the CTA High Dynamic Range (HDR) compatible display standards.
One of lightest and most compact 4K projectors on the market, set-up is simple with vertical lens shift and a host of connection options including two HDMI ports and Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) to project from phones and tablets. In addition, the UHD60 is compatible with the latest streaming dongles including Google Chromecast™ and Amazon Fire TV.
This was connected to a Playstation. Apple 4K TV and Samsung 4K DVD player.
Results
Heidi said: “After nearly 15 years of enjoying my TV room as a home cinema, I didn’t think it could get much better. Then Chris and Greg at Home Technology & Cinema introduced me to 4K UHD projectors … now the whole family fights for the cinema room. From gaming to TV to film nights with friends, the quality of the whole experience provides a wow factor second to none! We love it!!”
Chris said: “We are delighted with the installation. It was a challenge to suspend the projector from the beams, but also a real joy to work on. Even though we installed the latest home cinema technology, it blends perfectly into its historic setting.
“The audio quality is incredible. With the brilliant image quality from the UHD60 projector, the 5.2.2 Atmos Surround Sound creates this truly immersive experience! The projector holds up well during the day, even with ambient light, but in the evening it is simply stunning."
